From the Secretary’s Desk…

September at Lodge 590 was an amazing month. We were able to enjoy the pool for two extra weeks, saw the conclusion of Thursday night’s golf league, the final Super Tuesday, four days hosting the National Disabled Veterans Golf Clinic, the first couples Ryder Cup, the Chili Open, and the first-rate Sunday morning brunch. Please refer to the enclosed Lodge 590 calendar for all of the exciting events planned for October.

I would like to take a moment to remind all of our members how important the Elks is to our local community. We are incredibly lucky to have a golf course, swimming pool, and a beautiful new lodge to enjoy. Being an Elk goes way beyond these recreational activities. As Elks we support our local community by spreading Americanism within our schools, supporting local business, food pantries, and local veterans organizations. This is all possible because of The Elks National Foundation (ENF). The mission of ENF is to help Elks build stronger communities. Please help Lodge 590 meet our goal of $5 per member so we can continue to qualify for ENF Grants in the 2025 Elk year. Our current per member giving is $.64 per member.

I am pleased to report we currently have 827 initiated members as of September 30. We have added eighty-three new members so far this year and still have 26 waiting to attend an initiation on October 7 at 7 p.m.

We still have twenty-seven members that are delinquent on their dues, which is less than 5 percent. If you have not paid your dues, please contact me immediately with your intentions. Last year we lost thirty-five members the last month of the Elk year. Please contact me if you need to pay or plan to take a drop. Please do not wait until March to request a drop.

If you have concerns or other matters you wish to discuss or share, please feel free to email me, Nate Greazel ([email protected]); Exalted Ruler David Brunk ([email protected]); or Board of Trustees Chair Brian Kirschling ([email protected]). All communication is confidential. You can also attend a Lodge meeting and voice your concerns in the open.

Remember Elks Care-Elks Share and We Are THE Elks. God bless our Lodge, the Order, our Troops, our Veterans, and the United States of America.

Exalted Ruler Update

Hello October! One of the prettiest months for golf. The leaves will be changing color before they fall and the weather is perfect. Get out and play golf!

The Chili Open was a success! Just shy of $4000 was raised for the golf course improvement fund. Thank you to the membership of this club who love our golf course. It was a beautiful day to be together for fun and fellowship for a common cause.

Reminder for turf care. We are approaching frosty mornings. Please stay off the golf course until it melts. Don’t leave your tire tracks or foot prints for all to see for a long time.

Hello Elkdom! Fall is upon us. No reason to stop visiting our Lodge. Game Day specials, Fall golf events and plenty of volunteer activities for us all.

A few noteworthy events:

  • Boost Grant – $1000 used to support the Iowa City VA Hospital to purchase 145 Veterans suicide and prevention signs to the local area homes & business throughout the IC/Coralville area.
  • Spotlight Grant – $2000 for the various food pantries throughout the IC/CR corridor area.
  • National Disabled Veterans Golf Clinic – funded by Elks funds and allocated to a great cause.

Hats off to Nate Greazel, Terry Anderson, Peter Kessler/staff & other volunteers for making all these a great investment and a time well spent for Elks & all our benefactors.

There is plenty of time to help for all. Just because the weather is turning to cold does not mean we don’t have a lot to do and accomplish. Please reach out to me, Nate, or any other Board member on ways in which you can help.

Stop by the Lodge for dinner, game watches, or just to hang out. Bring prospective members. It is a great time to be an Elk at Iowa City #590!

David Brunk E.R. Iowa City Elks #590
